My Search for the Ultimate Taco

My favorite meal of all time just might be the taco.  I’m not talking about the tacos in a box from the grocery store or a deep fried taco with American cheese from a well known fast food chain, although these may be great for a drinking binge hunger.
The perfect taco.

I will only eat tacos the way they were meant to be eaten, like in the streets of Mexico.  I came across these tacos about 4 years ago when a local taqueria open up by us and they offered a Taco Tuesday.  All tacos were $1, so I tried it out.  It was quite possible the best stuff I’ve put in my mouth.
They offered al pastor (a delicious mixture of pork and pineapple), chorizo, cow tongue, steak and chicken tacos. All were incredible and included a heaping portion of meat then topped with simply onions, cilantro, and radishes.

Hominy: A Food that's NOT my Friend

While most of my blogs are going to be about foods I like, I want you to be aware of some foods that aren’t my friends.  As a “foodie,” which is what I would classify myself as, I’ve been exposed to a lot of different foods and cuisines.  Not all of these foods have become my friends, I won’t be sending them Christmas cards, and I definitely won’t become their friend on Facebook no matter how much they poke me!

My first food nemesis is Hominy.

This food hatred goes back to my childhood when my parents would make us choke down the canned version of this so called vegetable.  When I say choke, I mean this literally.

For those of you that don’t know, hominy is corn that is dried out and soaked in lye to become puffed up.   They are very bland and being puffed up makes it difficult to chew or swallow.  I like corn!  Why must corn go and try and be something it’s not?

If hominy was a TV show it would be The Jersey Shore.  Corn that looks like it’s been working out at the gym, but when you eat it, leaves a bad taste in your mouth and afterward you are filled with regret.

I would like to like you hominy, but in this day and age of steroids, I don’t need my food Lye altered. I mean why would I eat something that has Lye in it?  Let me see what rhymes with lye... hmm…. It’s on the tip of my tongue, starts with d....

Now I don’t want to start getting threatening letters from the hominy fan club members or the National Hominy Council, I’m sure some people like hominy very much. This is just one person's opinion.

There’s not a whole lot of food I won’t try and like, so take note food:  Be yourself and don’t try and be something you’re not and we will be friends for life…at least till I eat you, then you might un-friend me!

What's your food nemesis?

Bacon- the Mistress Food

All of my friends or anyone on Facebook knows my love of bacon; I rejoice its greatness on this earth every week.

I can’t remember exactly when my love of bacon came about, but I guarantee you it was way before everyone jumped on the bacon fad bandwagon over the last 5 years.  I’ve always liked bacon as a breakfast side over all the other sides.  No offense sausage, but you’re not crispy and salty, and ham, just forget about it, take your smoking jacket and pipe and go home.

Christmas Dinner!

Tonight we celebrated Christmas with our parents, Lee's sister, and our nephew.  Tonight also happened to be Lenny, our dog's, birthday.
Christmas Dinner Sides!

It was a feast and everyone contributed.  Lee's mom brought the brisket and mini key lime pies.  One thing you'll learn is that Lee has two cooking idols, his mom and the Food Network.  Margy's parents brought the rolls and Lenny's birthday cake.  Lee made Brussel Sprout Gratin and a Vegetable Tarte.
